Under the Roses – Free Verse
“If you don’t let go,/it will bury your heart,” I warn in “Under the Roses” a depiction of a world of depression, patterned by predictable set moments and words that bury love. The push away and pull apart of insecurities. A man fights within himself to control the urges of manipulation through his experience of his mother, then his living ex-girlfriends haunting him from one to the next.
Free Verse Poetry: “Under the Roses.”
I picture him always alone, unhappy, never at peace with himself.
In restless breathes. Deep, then shallow. The missing contentment.
Secluded, curtains pulled, shadows hold his thoughts.
Other visions— the laughter, light as air.
Him wallowing in self-pity, patterned expectations have fallen short.
Or the itinerant odor of rotten food and dishes in a sink.
My heart aches whenever I carry a conversation or text with him.
What holds more sadness, these tears or knowing I have tried to help and I can’t.
Introverted his capacity remains constant as the darkness, dark or light.
The ailing heart, a loss of love gone wrong.
Lying under the roses falling to sleep.
I grimace and fight the emptiness again.
Near this phone, where roses erupted fragrance and laughter rang.
Where I accept this moment and you suffer from pailing rocks upon your chest.
