In “Acquainted with Night Sounds”, a Free Verse Poetry.
I’m sharing a harrowing story of true life. I’m an avid hiker. At the time of this experience, my late husband, and brother-in-law, and I were camping in the wilderness of the southern Idaho. We were very acquainted with night sounds, although profound it could also be a chilling experience. We learned to respect this vast wilderness and its creatures.
Acquainted with the Night Sounds – Free Verse
I have been one acquainted with the night sounds.
I have walked out of the woods—and back into the woods.
I have outwalked the forest creatures of the night.
I have looked down the owl and the moon.
I have passed by the wolf on his prowl.
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to show fear.
I have stood long, and listen to hoof beats.
When upon the mountaintop a cry of defeat
Came over in echoes from ridges afar.
But not to stop me or to cause me fear
and further still at an uneasy shrill
One lone elk against a pack of the predators
Inevitable the hunger was destined or not destined.
I have been acquainted with the night sounds.
