“Life Among Stars” is a free verse poem that speaks to exhaustion that can affect a person who is the sole caretaker.
As the mother of a daughter who has lost her father to CANCER, I would be silly not to write about this. Being the sole caretaker is a challenging role, the continual “on call” demands, the daily changes to life, for my daughter and myself. This free verse poem “Life Among Stars,” I’m pleased to write—because it’s me.
It’s about those exhausting moments when a mother is stripped and isolated when you’re helpless, clueless, and not able to feel positive. Then I step out onto the deck and see the “Life Among Stars.”
Life Among Stars: Free Verse Poem
Star’s radiant shine: dimmer.
Then bright. Still, I watch.
Even among the black.
Too much delight here.
A striking meteor fire of white glitter.
Furred wings flutter for bugs.
Owl’s soft who are you.
Coolness collides. Goosebumps rise.
I settle to the distant hum
of wheels on pavement.
September night, a warm merlot.
I listen and owl hoots.
